From coffee to tea

Give up coffee? Every day around 9 am I do.  I was one of those people that could drink a whole pot of coffee by lunch and then I realized that I was having some side effects – shakes, restlessness and worst of all, lack of appetite.  I know, not being hungry sounds like a good idea if you want to loose weight but it’s not.  Not eating = poor nutrition, pour nutrition = tiredness, sickness and more.  So everyday I have two cups of coffee and then turn the coffee pot off.  I drink iced tea like crazy.  Good ole’ Lipton.  But as I delve further into my organic lifestyle I have found a new tea that is healthier and has endless possibilities for flavor.  Herbal loose tea!

First off, the news is always saying things about tea bags and chemicals and I find that it’s easier to avoid the news and go to organic loose tea.  Plus that means no waste since all the herbs are compostable and you reuse your tea ball, spoon or infuser.  I have a wonderful tea infuser that I love.

My favorite infuser. It works for a cup or a quart jar!

Tea is more than green, black or chai.  Tea is unlimited in tastes!  It is for everything from cooling and minty to warm and cozy.  It can be medicinal as well.  I won’t lie and say I can make the best tea ever but I am learning and I have been pleased so far.  Right now I have been drinking three cups of tea daily that I use as my anti-anxiety, love-drive tea.

My current concoction: St. Johns wort, damiana and rose hips. It still needs tweaking though.

I also use tea to treat sickness, make sleepy and perk up.

My sicko tea, equal parts mullin, licorice root, marshmallow root and peppermint. All the boys got sick so we used a lot of this this week but it really helps!

Mountain Rose Herbs has quality teas and loose herbs to treat whatever ails you.  If mixing your own herbs you should do some homework first.  For instance, licorice root tea is to be drunk no more than 3 cups a day because more than that can cause hypertension.  Also some herbs can affect milk production and uterine muscles and you should always consult your physician if you are pregnant or on any medication. Mountain rose herbs has taken the guesswork out of the herbal tea mixtures and you can get those here.  You can also grow many good tea ingredients.

Grow your own tea! Chamomile is easy and once you plant it it will come back every year. I harvest mine every few days once the flowers have opened. Then I dry them on a screen.

I’m guessing most people know how to make tea but here’s a tutorial just in case.

Must have to make good tea. Cup, good infuser and raw honey (a super food) for sweetening if desired.

As always, organic is best because you know there is no chemical residue on the tea.  For a wide variety of teas and tea supplies  check out Mountain Rose Herbs.  They are a very green company with good prices and wonderful quality.
